Purpose

This page contains the WarnGen List of Cities Inclusion Fraction values for all CWAs that focal points can use to explore in order to decide how or if to modify their office's values when transitioning to Hazard Services Convective.

List of Cities Inclusion Fraction Definition

You can adjust the following values to determine whether or not a city is included in your warning for both Zone and County based warnings:

- Distance Threshold: the distance in kilometers from the WarnGen tracking line 

- Maximum Results: the maximum number of cities returned in the list

- Inclusion Percentage: how much area (in percent) of a county/zone must be included to have a city included in the list

Changing your values

The values can be adjusted by editing the appropriate section in your GeospatialConfig_ZONE.xml and GeospatialConfig_COUNTY.xml files. 

Values across the NWS

The following values were obtained from WarnGen files from approximately July 2023. 

County Settings (GeospatialConfig_COUNTY.xml)

• The majority of sites use the following settings: 
  • Inclusion Percentage: - 1%
  • Max results - 20
  • Distance Threshold - 10 km
• Inclusion Percentage: Fourteen sites are set to greater than 1% (all are 10% or less with the exception of HFO which is set to 75%)
• Maximum Results: Nine sites are set between 10 and 20 and eighteen sites are set to 10 or less.
• Distance Threshold: Three sites are less than 10 km and one site is set to 30 (OUN)
• 13 sites do not have settings in WarnGen (ABR, CYS, EKA, GGW, GUM, HNX, ILX, PUB, SGX, SJU, STO, TFX, VEF) 

Zone Settings (GeospatialConfig_ZONE.xml)

• The majority of sites use the following settings: 
  • Inclusion Percentage: - 1%
  • Maximum Results - 20
  • Distance Threshold - 10 km
• Inclusion Percentage: Twelve sites have values greater than 1% (only three are set to greater than or equal to 10% - SJT, JAX, ALY)
• Maximum Results: Nineteen sites have settings less than 20 and one site has a value set to 25 (LOX)
• Distance Threshold: Only three sites are set to less than 10 km (JAX, GSP, ABQ)
• 16 sites do not have settings in WarnGen (CYS, DVN, EKA, EPZ, GGW, GUM, HNX, ILX, LKN, MSO, PUB, SGX, SJU, STO, TFX, VEF)
