GOES-R Land Surface Temperature

About

The GOES Land Surface Temperature (LST) product produces land surface temperature in Kelvin for all clear pixels. This is converted to degrees Fahrenheit locally in AWIPS for display. It is available in AWIPS during both day and night at a resolution of 2 km for Conus and Meso sectors and 10 km for the Full Disk sector. LST incorporates GOES bands 11.2 um (Ch 14) and 12.3 um (Ch 15). This product is useful when trying to detect temperatures at ground level, especially over areas where in-situ temperature readings are not available.

Limitations

Spatial Scope: Only pixels that are determined to be cloud-free by the GOES Cloud Mask algorithm provide a reading of LST.

Night Vision: Performance is degraded during the transition between local night and day.

Color Maps: GOES-R/GOESR-L2/VTRSB baseline

Sampling: °F

Quality Flags: N/A

Technique: Use in conjunction with surface observations to better identity air mass changes near the surface. This product may also be used to identity temperatures in areas without direct observations (due to remoteness or technological issues). This product can also be used to assess to stability of the atmosphere when overlayed in AWIPS with the GOES Derived Stability Indices or model-derived stability parameters.
