What is Doc and Media?
The term "Doc and Media" in Liferay essentially means "files". The Doc and Media portlet allows for the management of files, where you can do things like emulate a folder/file structure that is commonly found on computer systems, track files changes, present file attributes and statistics, and apply document submission workflows.
Note that the Doc and Media portlet is all about presentation of the files, not construction of the files. If dynamic collaboration is what is needed, Google Drive is better suited. (See the Google Content section of this Showcase community.)
What is it good for?
This may sound obvious, but the Doc and Media portlet is good for when a community has a good amount of files to manage and make available to the user base. These files can be things like software or program documentation, proposals, and case studies - really a wide range of file types and purposes.
How Do I Use It?
We have guidance regarding how to manage roles and permissions in the Doc and Media portlet (and configure it) and how to interact with the Doc and Media portlet.
