Page Hierarchy - VLab Showcase
Navigation: Page Hierarchy
- Below are a handful of styles for the Navigation Menu Portlet. Note not only the style of presentation, but also of how the different page levels are managed. Note how each does or does not emphasize the currently selected page and parent page.
- Each uses the same page structure - which is the structure used in this Showcase Community.
- As you can see, some are better suited for a horizontal space and others for a vertical space.
- For best results, the Navigation Menu Portlet should be placed on all pages that it manages, in the same location using the same Layout for all pages. This will provide cohesiveness.

What is Page Hierachy?
The term Page Hierarchy is used to describe how the pages in a community are organized and how that is related to how they are presented and how the user navigates through them. Although there are *many* ways to organize pages and a handful of ways to help users navigate them, it is valuable to see some of these basic Navigation Portlet methods in action. (Elsewhere in this Showcase, you will see other methods for presenting Page Hierarchies, such as Icon Grid.)
What is it good for?
Presenting your Page Hierarchy through the Navigation Portlet could potentially duplicate the main Nav Bar, but is a good replacement for when there are many top level pages in your community (too many for a single row in the main Nav Bar). Using the Navigation Portlet is also good for when you want it to apply to only a portion of your full Page Hierarchy.
How Do I Use It?
The VLab User Guide has a section devoted to managing the Navigation Portlet (need link).
