The Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) application serves research and development as a community development platform for advanced applications in radar, satellite, hydrology and aviation providing a real-time environment to test and evaluate new science and technologies for operational implementation. The MRMS application integrates radar, surface observations, satellite data, and numerical analysis and prediction fields to generate an automated, seamless national mosaic of 3-dimensional reflectivity, storm attributes and precipitation phase and rate at very fine temporal and spatial resolutions. The MRMS application addresses the objectives of and supports Weather Ready Nation initiatives by enabling forecaster identification and short-term prediction of hazardous weather and water conditions such as tornadoes and flash floods.

The MRMS application was developed over the last two decades at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in collaboration with NWS, the Global Systems Laboratory of the Earth System Research Laboratories (GSL/ESRL), and the University of Oklahoma Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorology Studies (CIMMS), now known as the Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO). MRMS was integrated into operations in the NOAA Integrated Dissemination Program (IDP) system in 2014. MRMS products are primarily distributed to customers via LDM and SBN and are available on disk to other IDP applications.

▌HOW TO ACCESS MRMS DATA FROM NCEP

Operational MRMS products are available in realtime from NCEP via HTTP and LDM in GRIB2 format.

MRMS data can be accessed from NCEP in two ways:

HTTP - From https://mrms.ncep.noaa.gov/data/

LDM - To access data via LDM, contact NCEP Central Operations at idp-support@noaa.gov. Please use “MRMS Data Request” in your subject line. Provide your IP address and contact name, phone number and email address. NCEP Central Operations will then provide host info, LDM feed type(s), etc.
