To accelerate advancement in climate prediction and services, STI leads scientific coordination and integration by engaging the climate community, synthesizing science-related issues and R&D needs identified by operational forecasters and end-users, and providing programmatic support to facilitate transition of research improvements into operations.

▌TOP NEWS

The 47th Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop (CDPW) Digest is now live! This year’s Digest showcases 18 extended abstracts from 16 authors that presented at the 2022 CDPW. Hosted by the Utah Climate Center at Utah State University in Logan, Utah, the 47th CDPW was held from October 25-27, 2023, and was co-sponsored by the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), and the Climate Services Branch (CSB) of the National Weather Service (NWS). The 47th CDPW and Digest is focused on four major themes:

  • Predictions and predictability of climate variability  across spatial and temporal scales, and forecast verifications.
  • Applications of modern technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence on the development of improved predictions at sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales.
  • Tools and techniques that bridge climate forecasts with climate applications and service delivery, including methods to address service equity, to foster resilience to impactful weather, water, and climate hazards.
  • Prediction and monitoring of hydroclimate in the Western U.S., including drought, snowfall and snowpack, pluvial flooding, extreme precipitation, and other variables related to water resources.

The CDPW Digest has been published annually since 2008, and is a continuation of the previous workshop proceedings (1976-2000), printed by the Department of Commerce (DOC). Digests are archived in the NOAA Institutional Repository - a digital library of scientific literature and research - ensuring its preservation and accessibility for all. Past volumes may be accessed by visiting the NWS OSTI R2O Climate Program CDPW Digest page. The CDPW continues to grow and provides a platform for discussing improvements in climate monitoring, diagnostics, prediction, applications and services. The next CDPW will be hosted by the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) and the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida from October 24-26, 2023.
