Lightning Working Group Activities

Lightning Working Group meets to provide situational awareness for offices and centers within NOAA (mainly NWS and OAR) on current and future lightning data, organize training for lightning data sources, coordinate with offices within NOAA to resolve any problems with data or how it appears on AWIPS/N-AWIPS, and looks into how to transition new lightning data and products into forecasting operations, both CONUS and OCONUS.

As of December 2023, the group has been concentrating on the expanded use of GLM data at WFOs.  There are scientists trying to see if the data from space-based and ground-based systems can be merged for short-term forecasting purposes and also for climatological analysis.
