HFIP

The Hurricane Forecast Improvement Program (HFIP) was established within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in June 2007 as a project with a mission to develop a unified strategy to address hurricane forecast improvements. HFIP aims to improve guidance for hurricane track, intensity, and storm surge forecasts, with an emphasis on rapid intensity change.
HFIP provides the unifying organizational infrastructure and funding for NOAA and other agencies to coordinate the TC research needed to significantly improve guidance for TC track, intensity, storm surge and precipitation forecasts. Another important goal is to accelerate the development and implementation of promising technologies from the research community into operations.
HFIP engages the broader community to research, develop, demonstrate, and implement enhanced operational modeling capabilities and make improved numerical forecast guidance available to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), which is the agency that issues the “official” U.S. TC forecast. Furthermore, through public-private-academic partnerships, HFIP facilitates the development of the next generation of TC researchers for NOAA.
