NWS Central Region offices will leverage technology to develop and support scientifically sound tools and techniques that aid execution of our mission
The Central Region Grid Methodology Advisory team lead the efforts to improve grid consistency and accuracy, while concurrently developing techniques that increase the efficiency of the process. For more information go to the following sites:
Key Tools Techniques:
Forecast Builder:
All Central Region WFOs will begin using the full version of ForecastBuilder, with a common initialization point utilized at all WFOs. Two reports from the 2016-17 ForecastBuilder demonstration documented the improvements made to process and output to the NDFD by using this technique. Full implementation of ForecastBuilder, and scheduled improvements to the tool made by the CRGMAT, represents a tactical step towards the larger EvolveNWS vision. ForecastBuilder empowers internal and external consistency across gridded elements, allows more time to focus on “targets of opportunity,” and lays a foundation for effective and consistent IDSS.
Hazard Builder:
HazardBuilder is embedded within ForecastBuilder and provides linkage between the WFO gridded forecasts, national center forecasts (e.g. SPC and WPC) and IDSS. HazardBuilder will drive new services, as well as the IDSS Trigger Chart, and Operations Tempo. WFOs will utilize the HazardBuilder application in GFE to identify times and locations when the office’s IDSS message will be most critical. HazardBuilder combines established impact thresholds with the latest information from the gridded forecast database, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), and the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) to provide a graphical depiction of potential impacts across an office’s service area.
