Frequently Asked Questions

— WAVE loops for Social Media —

WAVE can create optimized small-sized files. Although the GIF format results in files that are huge. WAVE also creates "MP4" and "WEBM", with great compression. See the Presentation Link UI and gifMaker UI. No need to upload the animated GIF to a 3rd party webs

Q: What is a good way to export animated loops for posts to social media?
A: One great way is to created an MP4 formatted animation from the gif Maker UI. MP4 file sizes are compressed without loosing quality.

— WAVE 1.5 Links —

Q: Are Presentation Links similar to Google slides and Briefing links?
A: Yes. These are all the same thing, a WAVE API service we call Presentation link. It is only available in WAVE 1.5 and later versions.

Q: How are QuickLink and Presentation Link similar?
A: Both are time savers.

When clicked, both features will copy a WAVE service hyperlink URL (also known as an API) for later use.

The hyperlink will be copied in the user’s clipboard; and for QuickLink the hyperlink will appear in the browser address bar.
The hyperlink can then be pasted into a document, an email, or elsewhere to share or for later use.

Q: What is the difference between WAVE’s Quick Link and Presentation Link?
A: Both are time savers.

QuickLink sets the WAVE graphical user interface selectors, then loads and displays the data based on the GUI selections.
Presentation Links can automatically make images and animation loops as requested (with no need to access the user interface).
Note: WAVE uses the information in the URL hyperlink to process the requests for both QuickLink and Presentation Link.

Q: Some users have manually created a Presentation link.  Is this good practice?
A: What ever works for the user is fine. Presentation link has been updated and vetted to be robust. The user could create a Presentation link by clicking this feature in WAVE 1.5 and compare with an existing Presentation link.

Note, the API service calls (QuickLinks & Presentation Links) do not need a trailing &

Q: About the QuickLinks & Presentation Links, ESRI discontinued a map service. What action do I need to take?
A: Solution for QuickLinks & Presentation Links,
replace
      &terrain=ESRI_Imagery_World_2D    (deprecated July 2022)
with
      &terrain=World_Imagery

Q: With the migration of WAVE 1.5 from the development version to production version, do I need to change the API links for gifMaker and Presentation links?
Example, URLs with this address prefix: https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/waveimg/getimage/makeLatestGif
A: No action is needed, with one exception.

GSL left the WAVE API services /waveimg/getimage/ and /makeLatest/ as they were, meaning these are operational going forward.
[ A second set of development WAVE API services need to be created for Presentation Link and gifMaker with a dev tag. ]

Q: Do I need to change the API links if /batch/ is used in the links?

A: Yes, if /batch/ is used then action is required by the user.
replace
     /batch/
with
     /getimage/

Q: With the migration of WAVE 1.5 from the development version to production version, do I need to change the API links for WAVE 1.5 QuickLinks?
Example, URLs with this address prefix:  https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/wavedev/?runTime=latestregionName=custom
A: Yes.
   https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/wavedev/?runTime=latest&regionName=custom
becomes
   https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/wave/?runTime=latest&regionName=custom

Q: With the migration of WAVE 1.5 from the development version to production version, do I need to change the API links for WAVE 1.0 QuickLinks?
Example, URLs with this address prefix: https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/wave/
A: No.

WAVE 1.5 has been retrofitted to accept WAVE 1.0 QuickLinks. Going forward, it is a best practice to re-save the QuickLink converted to the WAVE 1.5 syntax (from the WAVE 1.0 syntax).

— WAVE 1.5 Mask option —

Q: When toggling the mask on and off, the change do not show up on the map, but they do show up when creating a gif/mp4.

A: Press "SUBMIT".

The mask feature is implemented differently in WAVE 1.5 from the way it was implemented in WAVE 1.0. You are using WAVE 1.5.
To have the mask option of Conus displayed (or toggled off), the user needs to press the "SUBMIT" button. The Mask pull-down menu option for Conus says 'United States -- CONUS (Press SUBMIT)'. This does not apply to the other Mask menu options like Florida, etc.

— WAVE 1.5 Custom Box —

Q: When I want to select a “Custom Domain'' in WAVE 1.5 (one that is not in the list of Regions, like CONUS, Nevada, etc), how do I create a Custom Box in WAVE 1.5? Has this changed since 1.0?
A: selecting a Custom Box is implemented differently but has the same functionality as before.

 1) Select the blue-colored “+” to the right of the “Region:” selector,
 2) Click on first point on the map as the upper left corner, and
 3) Drag the mouse and click a second point, the lower right corner for your domain. An image will be redrawn.

If you are not satisfied, continue by making the domain smaller, or Start over and create a larger domain from the list of options (CONUS, for example) and then try the Custom Box again.

— Adding a City —

Q: How do I add a city to WAVE, or request a city spelling change in WAVE?
A: Using the guidance below, follow the city configuration example for the city or airport you would like to add (or correct), then send the request in an email to WAVE Support.

In the VLab WAVE repository, there is a link to the WAVE cities configuration file, list.txt.

This configuration file shows the city name, rank (priority) where 0 is the highest rank, lat/lon pair, as well as the METAR/ Airport ID (if available). Take a look at the config file list.txt, if you have permission to with NOAA credentials at VLab.

Subset example for OH.

Ohio
3 [LUK]  39.10   84.43  Cincinnati,OH
1 [BKL]  41.52   81.68  Cleveland,OH
1 [CMH]  40.00   82.88  Columbus,OH
3 [DAY]  39.90   84.20  Dayton,OH

Note: Cities ranked 0 always show, like Washington DC.
Cities are populated in the display as a result of software if-statements as a function of the rank [0-3] of the city, the distribution of other cities (spacing), name length, domain size, and font size, when adjusting the city density value from 0 to 10.

— WAVE 1.5 Region Menu —

Q: In the Regions Menu, what is ‘byRequest’?
A: We added ‘byRequest’ to indicate WAVE can set up an IDSS Events domain by writing to WAVE Support. An IDSS event example from the past is: Hawaii IDSS Lava Event.

— General Topics —

Q: Where does the WAVE software run?
A: Boulder, CO on virtual systems.

Q: Does the URL need the last “/“? As in https://hwp-viz.gsd.esrl.noaa.gov/wavedev/?
A: Yes.

— WAVE 1.0 —

Q: Where can I find WAVE 1.0? For NBM, etc?
A: We set WAVE 1.0 aside, for interim use. Write to WAVE Support if you need version 1.0.
