As the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society kicks off this week in Boston, the National Weather Service celebrates with it. 

Each has a rich history and, together, a tightly-knit relationship. Many of the Society’s earliest members came from the NWS’ predecessor organization, the U.S. Weather Bureau, and grew together during the first half of the 20th Century. As WWII gripped the nation, it became clear that weather and forecasting would play a significant role in military activities. As a result, the demand for trained meteorologists skyrocketed, and both the NWS and AMS experienced further  growth. As women left their homes and joined the NWS and as aviation forecasting dominated the field, new members flocked to AMS, eager to share knowledge and collaborate with other professionals.

Many NWS employees will be in attendance as we honor 100 years of collaboration. The NWS shares AMS’ relentless dedication and its mission to advance the atmospheric and related sciences, technologies, applications, and services for the benefit of society.
