Youngling Posts: 559 Join Date: 11/21/11 Recent Posts

VLab Forum Members,

The April VLab Forum will occur on Wednesday the 17th at 3 PM (Eastern Time) and feature a presentation by Jared Allen titled "Flood, Storm, and Wildfire-SAFER: An AGOL Application Suite enhancing hyper-local awareness for the NWS, Core Partners, and the Public". We hope you can attend. For more information on the talk, please see the details provided below.

If you want to participate in the forum remotely, please register for the webinar. Alternately, you can join us in SSMC-2, Room 10246.

Talk Abstract:

The Situational Awareness For Emergency Response (SAFER) suite is a set of ArcGIS Online (AGOL) dashboard applications designed for increased internal and external weather hazard situational awareness for a multitude of National Weather Service (NWS) Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS). Three main applications comprise the application suite 1) Flood-SAFER 2) Storm-SAFER and 3) Wildfire-SAFER. All three applications are wrapped into the Wyoming SAFER Hazard Dashboard.

  1. Wyoming SAFER Hazard Dashboard: https://arcg.is/aanH5
  2. Storm-SAFER Application: https://arcg.is/1faruT0
  3. Wildfire-SAFER Application: https://arcg.is/1Dj8XC

Each application is thematically designed and incorporates GIS layers to enhance spatio-temporal awareness for rapid hazard assessment and actionable decisions by the NWS and emergency managers. These applications strengthen and allow for clearer communication of weather hazards through greater warning text specificity, improved NWSChat notification, direct screen sharing capabilities to EOCs, and faster social media content generation. These applications have been focus-group tested, used for table top and functional exercises, and operationally implemented in Mississippi, Texas, and Wyoming. The applications are flexible and adaptable to any location in the United States or NWS Weather Forecast Office.

Agenda:

You can find the agenda for the Forum at the following link:

Talk Focus and R2O State:

  • Talk describe capabilities/functionality useful in NWS weather forecast office operations
  • Field Innovation (early stage work being done in NWS field offices)

Hi John,

I received the following information about the next VLab forum.  I have conflicting information about the date and time of the webinar.
You say in the following e-mail, the webinar will be on April 17 from 3 PM, ET.  However, when I registered for the webinar and looked into the agenda, they say it would be on April 19, 11:#0 AM, ET.
Could you please confirm the correct date and time?

Thank you,

I am forwarding an email that a colleague of mine here at NWSTC forwarded to our staff.

In the email from John Schattel below, note there is a VLAB Forum on April 17 to talk about these new tools.
You can click on the link to the right of the Wyoming SAFER Hazard Dashboard and see the tool in action now.
It's pretty slick.

Hope you find it helpful if you were not already aware of it.

Hi All,

These V-Lab forum presentations may be of interest to you. The presentation that Jared Allen will give on April 17, will have to do with the GIS situational awareness software he's been working on. If you haven't seen it before, it's pretty cool. See the links below for the times and topics. I'm going to try to catch all of these topics if I can.

Peggy,

Sorry for the confusion regarding the date/time of the April VLab Forum.  This month's Forum was rescheduled for April 19th at 11:30 AM EDT.  We moved it to accommodate the NWS Quarterly Program Review.  We sent out an update to all those who have subscribed to the VLab Forum notification list.  If you're interested, I'd be happy to add you to the list so you'll receive any announcements about this Forum and those we will hold in the future.  Just give me the okay to add your name to the list.

Regards,

New tools available for situational awareness.

Thanks!
