5/29/18 4470 – global_shared v14.1.4

On WCOSS, update 2 fix files and one script in the global_shared package so that new NOAA-20 CrIS and ATMS data will be assimilated into the GFS/GDAS system. To be implemented beginning on May 29 at 1430Z and should be completed on May 30.

1/5/18 4060 - global_shared v14.1.2

On WCOSS, switched operational assimilation of GOES-E AMVs (Atmospheric Motion Vectors) from GOES-13 to GOES-16. Implemented on January 5 at 1400Z.

12/18/17 4002 - GFS related (obsproc_satingest v3.4.2, obsproc_global v3.1.0, bufr_dumplist v1.5.0)
Several changes being made on WCOSS to start monitoring GOES-16 data in the GFS/GDAS models:
  • Changes to obs processing satellite ingest package and related packages to ingest GOES-16 data into WCOSS data tanks.
  • Update GDAS/GFS to begin monitoring GOES-16 data. A follow-on RFC will be submitted to change from monitor mode to assimilation mode in early January.

Separately, but included in this release, we will begin alerting ‘gfs.tCCz.nstanl.nemsio’ and ‘gdas.tCCz.nstanl.nemsio’, per a request from NCO/IDSB/Dataflow. To be implemented on December 18 at 1400Z.

8/10/17 3622 - GFS v14.0.2
This update fixed a GFS AWIPS 20 km grid potential vorticity (PV) surface level issue for CONUS, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Pacific Regions. Implemented on August 10 at 1800Z.
8/4/17 3614 - GFS v14.0.1

Fixed the GFS AWIPS Alaska 20 km grid u- and v-wind level issue that was introduced in the FY17 GFS upgrade using WGRIB2 interpolation. For the AWIPS Alaska 20 km grid, modified the option in WGRIB2 for interpolation to correct the wind rotation from 'wind related to earth'-oriented to ‘wind grid’-oriented and corrected the resolution and component flags from 48 to 56 in grid definition template 3.20. This change applied to the Polar Stereographic projection for the AWIPS Alaska 20km grid. Implemented on August 4 at 2000Z.

7/19/17 3526 – GFS v14.0.0

Implemented on July 19 effective with the 1200Z cycle. Major changes include:
- Implementing the Global Spectral Model (GSM) in the NEMS framework
- Replacing spectral output files with nemsio binary files
- Upgrade deep and shallow convection schemes
- Changes to the GDAS and Tropical Storm Relocation
- Changes to post-processing and output products.
Full details of the upgrade can be found at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notification/scn17-67gfsupgrade.htm

3/16/17 3047 – global_shared v13.0.7
ATMS bias correction was successfully spun up, so the ATMS data has been restored to active mode. Implemented on March 16 at 1400Z.
3/8/17 3000 - global_shared v13.0.6
On WCOSS, update the global_shared code to v13.0.6, which includes the following:

1) a minor GSI fix file change ( /fix/global_convinfo.txt ) to switch Meteosat-7 (satid=54) to monitor mode and switch Meteosat-8 (satid=55) to active mode to prepare for decontamination of Meteosat-7 AMV data on 9-14 March 2017 and final termination on 31 March 2017, 0900Z.
2) temporarily switch ATMS to monitor mode on or before the scheduled calibration change of ATMS data on March 8, 2017. To be implemented on March 8 at 1400Z.

12/13/16 2658 - global_shared v13.0.5
This is a necessary yearly update to add new CO2 global distribution data processed from the most recent station measurements to the GFS, NAM, DGEX, GEFS, HIRESW, and SREF. To be implemented on December 13 at 1240Z.
11/8/16 2517 - global_shared v13.0.4
Channel 15 on MetOp-B AMSU-A failed on October 17, 2016 at 0300Z. This resulted in the rejection of all data from this instrument by the GSI including the ability to monitor the data. A minor GSI code change (small changes to four subroutines) was made to allow the MetOp-B AMSU-A channels to be monitored and to restore to active the assimilation of channels 7-13 where quality control and emissivity estimated using channel 15 is not required. The change was tested in two full gdas/gfs and rap cycles. Implemented on November 8 at 1400Z.
5/19/16 1959 - GFS v13.0.3
The GFSO and AVNO tropical cyclone tracker output from the GFS used to be created in WCOSS directory /com/nhc/prod/atcf and this path was hardcoded in one script. With the recent GFS implementation, the hardcoded path was changed to not be hardcoded, but the output directory was changed to the GFS COMOUT directory, so NHC wasn’t finding the tracker output files in the expected directory. The script was updated to move the tracker output back to /com/nhc/prod/atcf. Implemented on May 19 at 1800Z.
5/11/16 1919 - GFS v13.0.2

Major upgrade of the GFS/GDAS. For details, see the TIN at: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notification/tin16-11gfs_gdasaaa.htm
