AWIPS WMO headers for GOES-R SCMI Products
The standard WMO header format will be used for GOES-R products. The optional bbb field will be used to encode tile numbers to allow tracking of individual tiles. The WMO header format is:
T1T2A1A2ii CCCC DDHHMM bbb
CCCC is KNES (NESDIS) for all GOES-R SCMI products
DDHHMM is a time string in UTC, where:
DD = day of month (01-31)
HH = hour of day (00-23)
MM = minute of day (00-59)
bbb uses the Pxx format for the optional bbb field, which is defined as:
Pxx = values of xx = AA through ZZ
The first bulletin segment heading will have sequence indicator xx = AA, the second AB and so on. The segment heading is a base 26 number using the letters of the alphabet to represent each digit. This scheme allows 26 * 26 or 676 possible combinations. Since the first tile will be 1 and the first segment must be AA, the tile number is first biased to 0 before calculating the segment.
Note that this implementation of Pxx is a variation of the standard used only for GOES-R products. The standard specifies that the final bulletin of a sequence, x, will be PZ<a>, where <a> is a repeat of the final character used in bulletin x-1. For example, if the bbb field for tile x-1 is PBF, then the bbb field for final tile x would be PZF. Because either advance knowledge of the number of tiles in a scene, or a method of identifying the final tile in a scene, is needed to implement the documented standard -- and neither are available -- this variation is used. It is not anticipated that this will cause issues for clients since there are no guarantees that all tiles for any given scene will be received, and products can still be displayed with missing tiles.
Non-Mesoscale WMO Headers
For Non-Mesoscale GOES-R SCMI products, the WMO header format will be:
T1T2A1 = TIR
A2 =
A Alaska Regional
C Center Conus
E East CONUS
H Hawaii Regional
P Puerto Rico Regional
S East Full Disk
T West Full Disk
U Center Full Disk
W West CONUS
ii = ABI channel number (01 - 16)
Mesoscale WMO Headers
For Mesoscale GOES-R SCMI products, the WMO header format will be:
T1T2A1 = TIS (for East position)
Update 8/8/2018:
T1T2A1 = TIU (for Center or West position)
A2 is derived from the following table:
90 180
-180 -165 -150 -135 -120 -105 -90 -75 -60 -45 -30 -15 0
75 +-----+--------------+-------------------------------------+ 75
| | | T |
60 | | R |-------------------------------------+ 60
| | | A | B | C | D | E | |
45 | |--------------+----+----+---+---+---| | 45
| V | | F | G | H | I | J | |
30 | | |----+----+---+---+---| U | 30
| | S | K | L | M | N | O | |
15 | | |-------------+-------| | 15
| | | P | Q | |
0 |----------------------------------------------------------+ 0
| Y | Z |
-90 +------------------------------+---------------------------+ -90
The region in which the center point of the scene is located determines A2.
Negative numbers denote Western and Southern hemispheres. Positive numbers denote Eastern and Northern hemispheres. 180 and -180 longitude refer to the same line.
Left and bottom boundaries are included within the regions, right and top
boundaries are not. For instance, region A is defined as:
Any point (, ) is within region A if the following conditions are satisfied:
45 < 60
-135 < -120
where:
is latitude with the permissible range (-90 90)
is longitude with the permissible range (-180 180)
ii = ABI channel number (01 - 16)
NOTE - One of the goals of this scheme is to produce unique WMO headers to aid tracking efforts for troubleshooting and for auditing. This scheme will likely result in duplicate headers for mesoscale scenes produced for the same scan cycle that are from the same geographic region. For instance, if the first of two mesoscale images produced for a given scan cycle on ABI channel 1 is centered at 30N/45W, and the second mesoscale image for the same scan cycle is centered at 15N/15W, then the WMO header for tile #1 for both images will be:
TISU01 KNES ddhhmm PAA
with “ddhhmm” being identical if both images started during the same clock minute.

See the data format registry VIIRS link for information on the VIIRS imagery channels currently deployed. All incoming VIIRS granules that significantly intersect these regions are delivered to AWIPS-II users. This is an example to work from for assigning WMO headers to additional polar products.
