Angel Segura Project on Ice cover in Antartica

HI everyone,  I am going to model the area exceeding a given threshold of ice concentration in Antartica.

I need a large data series in order to have statistical power. Thus I choose from Polar Watch the file entitled  Sea Ice Concentration, NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record V3, Arctic, 25km, Science Quality, 1978-2019, Monthly.

Monthly resolution is OK. The remaining products does not have such a longer in time series. Within that data set I choose the Goddard product as it has data since 1978, while the product with no reconstruction start in 1987.

From the data I estimated the monthly climatology and choose those cells were ice concentration was lower than 10% as threshold.

Then for each month I separated those previously selected cells and estimated the Area of ice cover. As long as I understood, the projection ensures that each cell is 25 x 25 km and thus there is no need to correct for changes in latitude with cell area. I would like to confirm this...

Then multiplying 625*iceFraction for those cells above the threshold and suming up for all the cells in a given month gives the area of excees in each month.

Then, the distribution of those excess it is expected to follow a Generalized Pareto Distribution (GDP).

Thats all for the time.

Best regards

Angel
