Emily Shaw - Course Project

Hi all, for this class project I plan to explore the impact of wind stress on plant community composition at two different coastal sites on Vandenberg AFB. I am interested in creating a visual representation of wind data with native vs. non native plant coverage using ArcGIS software.

RE: Emily Shaw - Course Project

The wind data set that I have chosen to work with is "Wind, Metop-A ASCAT, 0.25°, Global, Near Real Time, 2009-present (14 Day)". I needed a data set that had more data closer to the present (2012 to present specifically). Most of the wind data sets at the top of the list only had data up until 2011. Wind varies greatly so I picked a 14 day composite. I chose not to select data with divergence and modulus because the graph seemed chaotic and had clear gaps unlike data sets that did not take divergence and modulus into account.

Hi Emily,

What time period do you need?

There is another wind dataset that has data every 6 hours and is gap-free (it merges data from a lot of wind sensors and some model data).

There is data from 1987-2019:
monthly averages: https://oceanwatch.pifsc.noaa.gov/erddap/griddap/ccmp-monthly-v2-0.graph
daily: https://oceanwatch.pifsc.noaa.gov/erddap/griddap/ccmp-daily-v2-0.graph

And Near-real time data from 2016 to the present:

Hi Emily,

Check out the CCMP winds  v2.1 (2015-present). That dataset might work for your project. It is a blended product containing data from microwave satellite radiometers and scatterometers  Spatial resolution of 0.25° that is produced every 6 hours.

If you need to go back to 2012, you can pick up those years from version 2.0 of the dataset, which extends from 1987-2019.
