Nataly Gutierrez-Day 1 (Panoply vs ArcGIS or QGIS)

Hi, I would like to know if there is an advantage of using Panoply vs ArcGIS or QGIS when mapping satellite data

Nataly -

That is an excellent question!  To answer that question you have to ask what is it tool designed for and what are you trying to do?  For example, when you are building a house, you are going to need more than one tool. A hammer is most useful when you need to pound nails, but fairly useless if you need to cut wood. Panoply will quickly and easily make a map (and a quite pretty one) of the data in a netCDF file and show you the contents of a file.  But you can't do any real analysis of the data, or customize the plot by adding other datasets etc. like you can with ArcGIS or R.  If you are having difficult reading in a netCDF file (this came up for some people yesterday doing the ERDDAP tutorial on a PC) Panoply can be used to check the validity of the file.
