Satellite Operations Updates - Total Operational Weather Readiness - Satellites (TOWR-S)
November 2017 GOES-16 Drift Newsletter
The TOWR-S team at NWS HQ wanted to pass along the following message (below) that was issued by the AWIPS NCF regarding the drift of GOES-16 to its operational position as GOES-E. As stated below , a more detailed SCN regarding the drift will be issued soon. As you've likely already noticed, GOES-16 data has stopped as of ~1330Z the morning of 30 November 2017.
If you have any questions about these products, please contact Eric Guillot at NWS HQ at eric.guillot@noaa.gov.

SUBJECT - GOES 16 DRIFT AND TRANSITION TO OPERATIONS
Following notification provided to ensure widest dissemination of upcoming changes for the GOES-16 service.
On November 30, 2017 between 1300-1430 UTC, five GOES-16 instruments (ABI, GLM, SUVI, SEISS, and EXIS) will be placed in safe or diagnostic modes and GRB, DCS, HRIT-EMWIN, and SARSAT will be disabled.
After 1430 UTC, GOES-16 will begin drifting from its present location of 89.3 degrees West at a rate of 1.41 degrees per day. It will complete its drift on December 11, 2017 when it reaches its final operational location of 75.2 degrees West.
We encourage all customers to maintain an active watch of the following NESDIS web page to remain current on all evolutions of the GOES-16 transition to GOES-East.

NOTES:
1) All drift and transition operations will be led by the NESDIS Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) with GOES-R Program operational support. Final scheduling of drift operations may change based on operational needs and will be a NOAA-level decision.
2) An upcoming transition-related SCN to be be issued soon shall further describe effects of the GOES East transition on SBN users specifically.
