Purpose:
This jobsheet covers how to use CAPPI and Basics as part of the new 23.4.2 Radar Cross Sections.Tasks:
- Start by opening a single panel editor.
- Under Cross Sections->CAPPI in your desired radar menu, load Reflectivity. Note the Requesting Grid Data message in the bottom right while it takes a few seconds to load.
- Step through the vertical levels (1.5Kft and 5Kft increments) with up/down arrows and observe no data beneath 0.5 degree tilt, and no data in the cone of silence, and the edge of domain box (depending on precip coverage).
- Right click and hold on the CAPPI text legend to change the Vertical Integration layer to Shallow Convection.
***NOTE: If you have multiple CAPPI products loaded, and you switch to Shallow Convection, it only changes one product at a time. You will need to adjust the time match basis, then change the Vertical Integration layers for each.
- Step through the layers and note the finer lower level resolution (0.5Kft and 1Kft) and the top only goes up to 15Kft.
- Open your desired radar menu, scroll to Cross Sections and double click the top row of dashes that appears (above 3 Panel Combo). This will tear off the Cross sections menu, and make it easier for loading many products.
- On top of Z, load CAPPI: Velocity, Spectrum Width, ZDR, CC, KDP, and HCA.
- Use keypad shortcuts to toggle off layers 2-7. Step back to the previous full volume scan. Then step through 2-7 toggling each on and off to see the product relative to Z. This is the way to manage multiple products.
***NOTE: This is different from GR2 and FSI. In the new AWIPS cross sections, you can’t load one thing and cycle through each product with shortcuts, though you can stack and toggle. - Configure a new layer preset:
- Open the Localization perspective and click on D2D->Vertical Integration Levels and right click VerticalIntegrationLevels.xml BASE and Copy To->User.
- Double click on the USER version of this file.
- The format may show up initially under the Design tab. Switch over to the Source tab.
- Copy and paste one of the groups (both rows within the group tag) and change the name and heights.
- Click save (or Ctrl+S).
- Go back to the D2D perspective and right click the text legend to load the new preset.
***NOTE: Too many levels make it harder to navigate with lots of redundant data and requires more frames and memory to use, so refine these over time. - Go back to the localization perspective, right click on the USER override of VerticalIntegrationLevels.xml and delete. Return to the D2D perspective.
- Open the Localization perspective and click on D2D->Vertical Integration Levels and right click VerticalIntegrationLevels.xml BASE and Copy To->User.
