Suggestion: Integrate MRCC VIP Frost/Freeze status in HazardBuilder

For the HazardBuilder frost/freeze grids, I suggest somehow utilizing the frost/freeze status from MRCC/VIP in the calculation for frost/freeze. This is a low priority request, but would probably be the best way to utilize a resource that already exists. I bring this up because we have April as an active month for frost/freeze, so now HazardBuilder is going pink/purple for our threat every single period. (We're sitting well below normal with highs near freezing and lows approaching zero at times over the next week.)

I do not know of a method to import that advisory status into AWIPS, but I bet we could work with MRCC to find a way since they already have the raw status data in a GIS-ready format.

As an alternative, we could have a manually-updated "yes/no" grid for the growing season that HB could look at to see if it needs to assess a frost/freeze threat.

A second alternative would be to stop issuing frost-freeze products. :) Or a third alternative could be to eliminate frost-freze stuff from HB and the Trigger Charts since for most of us there is little added workload for this program.

Hello Joseph,

You probably know this, but in the HB Config Utility, you or at least someone at your site with the appropriate privileges (ITO) can make changes to turn off Frost/Freeze months.  Specifically, in HazazrdBuilderConfig.py utility, line 60 (or so) you'll find HBFrostFreezeMonths.  I suggest removing the "4" out of that variable, at least for this year as it's been very cold.

Hopefully this helps.  The other questions may be touch upon by other team members much more knowledgeable than I.

Good luck.
