Wind direction at Lake-Land interface

While we have generally been happy with ConsRaw over the lake for winds compared to SuperBlend (Lake Michigan), there can be at times an abrupt wind shift at the land lake interface with Super Blend and Cons Raw wind directions being sometimes 60-90 degrees off. Would ConsAll be a better option being that it has similar direction to the SuperBlend (being a large component of SuperBlend). We are just trying to find some nuisance issues that do require editing to grids that may not necessarily need to be otherwise because speeds are ok.

Kevin,

We at MQT have noticed the same issue. I would have to look at some verification, but perhaps we could switch to SuperBlend over the marine zones in the summer to seasonally fix the issue.

In complex terrain we have noted CONSALL is performing better when it matters (high wind events), versus SuperBlend which has a distinct low bias.  The ADJMET and ADJMAV guidance can also perform well, as it recognizes locations prone to strong winds.  Do you see the same over the lakes? It should be noted we are scheduled to shift to using the NBM for winds by next October, so if you can provide feedback also including the NBM that would be helpful.  You may have to have your ITO configure GFE to ingest NBMExp (the experimental NBM you'll see this fall).  Thanks! Dave, in my experience (not hard verification), CONSAll winds are too weak over marine areas in general, and especially in higher-end events, because of the inclusion of MOS guidance that is often too weak over marine areas. I haven't had the chance to do a lot of NBMEXP evaluation with stronger winds, but we do have it coming in and it seems to be an improvement over SuperBlend, but perhaps not as good as CONSRaw. Also, I've noticed some whacky wind directions with NBMEXP (dramatic wind direction differences across small areas) that hopefully will get fixed prior to us switching over.
