Much of my work utilizes stable isotope (SI) patterns in ecosystems and animals to recreate movement patterns and foraging behavior. I use both bulk and compound-specific SI collected from tissues of sea turtles and marine mammals. I am hoping to gain proficiency in incorporating satellite-sensed data to compare temporal and spatial patterns of biological (i.e. productivity / chl-a / other) and physical conditions (i.e. temperature SST / sea ice coverage / other) with the SI patterns obtained from animal tissues. For this course, I plan to revisit bulk and compound specific stable isotope data from a previous postdoctoral project that I collected from annual growth layers of the teeth from juvenile Northern Fur Seals. My spatial and temporal focus will be on data covering the North Pacific and Bering Sea from ~1940-2015.

Hi Cali,

Welcome to the course! Here are a few datasets that come to mind that may be of interest to you:

OCCI ocean color - https://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/erddap/search/advanced.html?page=1&itemsPerPage=1000&searchFor=cci50&protocol=griddap&cdm_data_type=%28ANY%29&institution=%28ANY%29&ioos_category=%28ANY%29&keywords=%28ANY%29&long_name=%28ANY%29&standard_name=%28ANY%29&variableName=%28ANY%29&maxLat=&minLon=&maxLon=&minLat=&minTime=&maxTime=

Long time-series sst

Historical sea ice back to 1850: links to plot of sea ice in 1940:

Erddap advanced search by time - datasets covering 1940 in the WestCoast erddap:

Great - many thanks for these leads. I will start exploring these more now - thanks again.

I've been exploring a few datasets and options - this monthly composite provides the best spatial coverage, despite the more limited time window: Chlorophyll-a, Orbview-2 SeaWiFS, R2018.0, 0.1°, Global, 1997-2010 (Monthly
Composite)

I've been focusing on a few key months that follow one hypothesis we're considering: years blooms (~April) vs. later blooms (~June) will correspond to CSIA patterns we've collected from our Northern Fur Seal samples. I've taken a preview of a few years to compare. Will try the Hovmoller approach next to get a better view over time.

Some success in generating previews of the Hovmoller plots following the marine heatwave example. Will continue exploring customization and outputs from a couple other datasets (SST, sea ice, ocean color).

Cali -

If you are interested in data past 2010 you might want to look at the ESA Oc-CCI dataset, which merges data from SeaWiFS, MODIS and VIIRS into one dataset that spans from 1998 to present.

Much more exploring to do - and lots of learning to go working with Panoply and ERDDAP with R. But for now - found some interesting initial leads.
