Welcome to the RTMA/URMA VLab community!

The purpose of this community is to facilitate feedback and discussion on the RTMA/URMA system.

Meeting notes are available under the Google Drive Folder linked above.

To learn more about our next upgrade, see the asset publication below.

Use the System Overview to learn more about the system in general.

Use the forum to ask questions about the system and join the discussion with other users and the development team.

Note that there are two forums: one for precipitation issues and one for all other variables.

You can post to the precip issues forum by sending an email to qpe.rtma.urma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  For all other issues, you can post by sending an email to rtma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  Please note that you must have a user account to post to the forum.  If you do not have an account, please contact matthew.t.morris@noaa.gov.

We recently added the ability for NWS Regional or WFO personnel to request that stations be removed from the analysis.  To access this, click on the "Station Reject Lists and Requests" tab.

There has been recent interest in knowing exact station locations, especially those of METAR sites.  Our METAR information table is under the "METAR Location Info" tab.

Users may also be interested in the National Blend of Models VLab community.

We appreciate any feedback on how this page or community could be improved.  You can submit such feedback via the above email handle or forum.

Hey Matt,

We've had a few questions about access to URMA archives, for use to verify and validate forecasts.  Do you have any updates on where an archive exists or will exist?

We've noticed that the AWS-based URMA files appear to have begun "archiving" in locations like this. since the beginning of March 2023, but are unsure if these will continue, as well as any details on when files show up in the directories, vs real-time versions.

https://noaa-urma-pds.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html#urma2p5.20230320/

Are there any comprehensive details out there on RTMA/URMA data and dataflow (and any archive) that you can provide here?  Or, is it here, and I've overlooked it.  Thanks

Hi Jack,

The NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD) Program is maintaining the RTMA/URMA archive on AWS.  For more information on this archive, please see: https://registry.opendata.aws/noaa-rtma/

The NODD archive does not serve as an official NOAA archive, but the NODD does not have any plans to delete the data.  Currently, RTMA data goes back to the start of 2019 and URMA data to early March 2023.  Since URMA is more widely used for verification purposes, we would like to backfill the URMA archive to January 2019, as well, but it's not clear if that will be possible.  The data will appear in the S3 bucket as soon as it is available on NOMADS.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I am the SOO at WFO Mobile and I have recently joined the new southern region verification team (VTOT) and we are interested in conducting some verification of the URMA dataset. I have read through the threads between yourself and Jack S. regarding backfilling the URMA archive to January 2019. I wanted to see if there have been any updates on if/when this will be possible? Thanks in advance for any updates that you can provide.

Sincerely,

Jon Howell

Hi Jon,

We have reached out to the NODD group, and it sounds like they should be able to backfill the URMA archive to January 2019, although it's unclear how long this process will take.

Thanks,
Matt
