Welcome

Welcome to the RTMA/URMA VLab community!

The purpose of this community is to facilitate feedback and discussion on the RTMA/URMA system.

Meeting notes are available under the Google Drive Folder linked above.

To learn more about our next upgrade, see the asset publication below.

Use the System Overview to learn more about the system in general.

Use the forum to ask questions about the system and join the discussion with other users and the development team.

Note that there are two forums: one for precipitation issues and one for all other variables.

You can post to the precip issues forum by sending an email to qpe.rtma.urma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  For all other issues, you can post by sending an email to rtma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  Please note that you must have a user account to post to the forum.  If you do not have an account, please contact matthew.t.morris@noaa.gov.

We recently added the ability for NWS Regional or WFO personnel to request that stations be removed from the analysis.  To access this, click on the "Station Reject Lists and Requests" tab.

There has been recent interest in knowing exact station locations, especially those of METAR sites.  Our METAR information table is under the "METAR Location Info" tab.

Users may also be interested in the National Blend of Models VLab community.

We appreciate any feedback on how this page or community could be improved.  You can submit such feedback via the above email handle or forum.

GRIB filenames, blacklist spreadsheet

Youngling Posts: 23 Join Date: 11/2/12 Recent Posts
1) I noticed in trying to view URMA2.5 datasets, that in directories like these:
some of the file names appear to end in a ".wexp" extension, vs the ".grb" extension.
Can that be remedied, if that is an incorrect naming?

2) Is this spreadsheet still maintained with regards to which stations have been identified by WFOs to need to be blacklisted?

Hi Jack,

When compared to the true CONUS NDFD grid, the "wexp" grid contains 220 additional rows at the northern boundary and 200 additional columns at the western boundary.  These extensions were made at the request of the Northwest River Forecast Center and Ocean Prediction Center, respectively.  For simplicity and owing to space constraints, only the "wexp" grid is output on the NOMADS website.  Note: All output files on the NOMADS page are on the "wexp" grid, including those that do not explicitly list "wexp" in the file name (e.g., urma2p5.2021112200.pcp_01h.mask.grb2).

The spreadsheet is updated automatically each time the RTMA/URMA station QC form is filled out, and subsequently updated manually to indicate the time the stations are flagged.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Matt

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the responses.

1) I was just confused by seeing the trailing .wexp extension on some of those file names, which then caused some software to not list them in a directory view, hence my wondering if the names could be made to all have .grb extensions.  Thanks for the details.
2) I was perusing the Sheet to see if the recent WFO MAF stations that were blacklisted in some regard were in the Sheet, and when I didn't see them, wondered.

If everything is working as desired, and understood by those close to the topic at hand, great.

Hi Jack,

The recent WFO MAF stations were added to the spreadsheet, but Google doesn't necessarily append new stations to the end of the spreadsheet.  If you search for the stations in question, you should find them.

Thanks,
Matt

Gracias, I see a few entries now, buried in the middle of other date/time stamps.  Good to know.
