Welcome

Welcome to the RTMA/URMA VLab community!

The purpose of this community is to facilitate feedback and discussion on the RTMA/URMA system.

Meeting notes are available under the Google Drive Folder linked above.

To learn more about our next upgrade, see the asset publication below.

Use the System Overview to learn more about the system in general.

Use the forum to ask questions about the system and join the discussion with other users and the development team.

Note that there are two forums: one for precipitation issues and one for all other variables.

You can post to the precip issues forum by sending an email to qpe.rtma.urma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  For all other issues, you can post by sending an email to rtma.feedback.vlab@noaa.gov.  Please note that you must have a user account to post to the forum.  If you do not have an account, please contact matthew.t.morris@noaa.gov.

We recently added the ability for NWS Regional or WFO personnel to request that stations be removed from the analysis.  To access this, click on the "Station Reject Lists and Requests" tab.

There has been recent interest in knowing exact station locations, especially those of METAR sites.  Our METAR information table is under the "METAR Location Info" tab.

Users may also be interested in the National Blend of Models VLab community.

We appreciate any feedback on how this page or community could be improved.  You can submit such feedback via the above email handle or forum.

3D-RTMA Update and/or Preview?

Youngling Posts: 9 Join Date: 4/26/15 Recent Posts

Good morning! I was looking to find some more information on 3D-RTMA. I know the target date is still a ways out, but I saw an 2019 AMS presentation that showed some preliminary data being compared to other analysis systems and was curious if there is any experimental data out for viewing (or when we might start seeing experimental data). Beyond that, it might be nice to see a general update here on the VLAB about how development on 3D-RTMA is going and what we might be able to expect from it (e.g. do we know what fields it will have yet?).

Thanks!

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for your interest in learning more about the 3D-RTMA project.  We currently expect the first implementation to occur in FY2024.  I've attached a poster that was presented at last year's NWA Annual Meeting that provided a brief overview of the 3D-RTMA project.  In addition, several talks and posters were presented at the AMS Annual Meeting earlier this year, which may be a good reference (note: the last link is from the 2019 meeting):

Experimental 3D-RTMA fields have been evaluated in research testbeds, namely the Hazardous Weather Testbed Spring Forecasting Experiment (HWT-SFE) and Aviation Weather Testbed (AWT).  We expect to be able to advertise experimental 3D-RTMA fields publicly later this year after additional development/testing.

The first implementation of the 3D-RTMA/URMA system will have all of the analysis fields currently available in the 2D system as well as 3D analyses of the basic atmospheric fields (e.g., temperature and wind).  It will also include derived severe weather fields and aviation fields.  More broadly, in the future, we should be able to provide a high-resolution analysis or diagnosed version of any forecast field available from a model such as the HRRR.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Matt
