Hi All:

The 30-day IT stability test for RTMA/URMA v2.10 began on Friday, January 6th.  NCO plans to implement the upgrade on February 7th.  Please see below for further information.

Thanks,
Matt

All,

NCO has begun the IT stability test for the Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis (RTMA) version 2.10.4 and Unrestricted RTMA (URMA) model version 2.10.3

The RTMA and URMA upgrade slide deck is attached to this email.

Further details about the upgrade can be found in the SCN:

We ask that users review the output from NCO's parallel to ensure formatting and product availability are correct. Data can be accessed on NCO's websites at:
The above links for each model have equivalent data.

We will run the parallel through February 5, with the intention of implementing the upgrade on February 7. We ask for any feedback no later than February 5.

Matthew,

Is there a place to see the station list of METARS, buoys, CMANs, etc. that are displayed on the maps that go into the Wind and Gusts RTMA/URMA.  Similarly, as has been done for the FAA, might there be a place to see RTMA/URMA values at those station locations?  I ask as it would be a great compliment when verification and validation folks dig in on events whereby the RTMA/URMA analyses seem to not include observations, for one reason or another, which then leads to the potential for event verification scores to favor one forecast (e.g. NBM) over another (e.g. NDFD) if seemingly valid observations are not incorporated.

Hi Jack,

We generate KML files to monitor observation usage in the operational RTMA/URMA.  They can be found on the FTP server at: https://ftp.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/mmb/rtma2/for_eval/ob_files/

These are text files, so you can read them directly, or you can view them in Google Earth.  It is important to note that these files do not contain restricted observations, since they are publicly available; however, we do generate KML files that include these observations and can be shared on an as-needed basis.

Also, those with access to WCOSS2 can view the obs listing files for RTMA/URMA.  These files are used to generate the aforementioned KML files.  Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the KML files.

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks Matt.

I was able to peruse the files and see that the report of zero wind speed from site=E9599 was Rejected, which I can only assume means it was not used to influence the URMA.  I've added reference to these data in my slide deck, soon posted in a new case.
