The Aviation Forecast Verification Tool (AFVT) - Vlab Forum

VLab Forum Members,

The November VLab Forum will occur on the 16th at 2 PM (Eastern Time) and feature a presentation by Tabitha Huntemann titled "Aviation Forecast Verification Tool: A near real-time verification system to support Digital Aviation Services." Talk Abstract:

The Aviation Forecast Verification Tool (AFVT) provides near real-time weather forecast verification of selected meteorological parameters from gridded human-generated forecasts available from the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) for use by the aviation community. This web-based tool is envisioned to support forecaster needs for an objective way to evaluate the forecast quality of Digital Aviation Services forecasts. It will provide new capabilities for near-real time verification of selected weather parameters for national-scale gridded forecasts of importance to aviation operations.

Talk Focus and R2O State:

  • Talk describes capabilities/functionality useful in NWS weather forecast office operations
  • Research Transition (laboratory work with clear R2O potential)

Could you change the title of the Vlab Forums to include the title of the talk? It would be a big help when adding to calendars and especially for recordings afterwards.

We will have a VLab Forum today (November 16th) at 2 PM Eastern Time in SSMC-2 Room 10246 that is entitled "Aviation Forecast Verification Tool: A near real-time verification system to support Digital Aviation Services". There's a saying, "What gets measured gets improved" and at today's Forum, you'll hear about one NWS effort focused on measuring/verifying aviation forecasts. This talk will cover the data used by the Aviation Forecast Verification Tool and how the tool is used to visualize verification data.
