  • TIROS-1, the World's First Successful Weather Satellite in Orbit — An artist's rendering of the TIROS-1 (Television Infrared Observation Satellite) spacecraft in orbit above Earth. Launched on April 1, 1960, the drum-shaped satellite, covered in over 9,000 solar cells, was equipped with two television cameras and video recorders. The mission successfully demonstrated the feasibility of monitoring Earth's cloud cover and weather patterns from space, sending back more than 19,000 usable pictures during its 78 days of operation and proving the value of weather-observing satellites for global forecasting.
