Marine Thunderstorm Wind Gust LSR Entry

Hey,

There used to be an LSR entry type for Marine Thunderstorm Wind Gust, however during a recent event, our forecasters noticed that the option is no longer there. Is this by design, or is this a bug?

Thanks,

Hi Jimmy,

I noticed the same thing just recently along with a lot of new LSR types in the drop down menu.  I was able to trace it back to this change that was implemented a few days ago, so it was by design.  https://www.weather.gov/media/notification/pdf_2023_24/scn23-31_lsr_source_changes_2022_aac.pdf  I guess we're just supposed to use the regular thunderstorm wind LSR to document marine gusts now.

Any idea how these changes will impact Storm Data? For the lack of marine thunderstorm wind, I can see this really getting on SPCs nerves since they get alerted for every "thunderstorm wind gust" and Marine has a much lower threshold than severe. They also get "dinged" on those until they are filtered out. I wonder if this change will stick because of that?

Lauren,

I thought that at first, but I would imagine they could put some language in whatever scripts they have that put the LSRs on the site that would discount anything in a marine zone. Hopefully that would be fairly easy to do...

At the very least they already have to have scripts that discount any LSRs under 50kts/58mph, so the low-end marine gusts at least won't show up.
