INWS PREEXISTING SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENTS (SPS) ISSUE

Dear IRIS/iNWS users,

NCO has been alerted to an INWS discrepancy that will not send Special Weather Statements.  Since this issue has been embedded in the iNWS system for years and was just discovered..NCO will stand down on this issue for the weekend and will investigate the problem over the coming weeks where more testing can be performed. Users can get Special Weather statements from the following link: https://forecast.weather.gov

Matt and team,

Could more clarification be provided on this issue?  I can verify with 100% certainty that iNWS has been sending SPSs for years, including this month. I can forward example emails if you wish. I'm not sure leaving this inactive for weeks is acceptable versus previous partner experience and expectations.

Hi Brad,

The issue occurred after the last version. It's really technical, but essentially I added a logging statement to the code, and that statement triggered a hidden bug deep in the original iNWS code. The bug only affects non-VTEC products. The fix was to remove the logging statement and to fix the underlying bug.

Thanks,
Matt

Just to confirm, polygon SPS's should be going out over IRIS, correct? And there's no longer a 3% criteria to trigger iNWS? We got a complaint from an EM that they are not seeing the SPS's over iNWS. He didn't have a solid example, so I don't have enough details right now and will have to follow up with him in the future. I just wanted to confirm that this problem is supposed to be fixed before I reopen it.

Hi Louise,

Yes, iNWS sends SPSs. The partner needs to have the 'Other' alert type selected for their alert area.

Thanks,
Matt
