Update VLAB Training Page with "new" version of Edit Retention docs?

Hi, folks.

Thank you for your help over the years. Despite my occasional grumbling, I am grateful for the work of the team. ForecastBuilder is a wonderful tool and greatly simplifies the forecast process. From my perspective it almost makes the process too easy, which is the source of frustration when things don't " just work". That is a real testament to the great work you all have done.

In light of the increased reliance on EditRetention as part of the WPC 4-7 paradigm, I wanted to review my understanding of EditRetention. Upon reviewing the Edit Retention docs available at https://vlab.noaa.gov/web/forecastbuilder/training I noticed they seemed out of date.

I would be grateful if the team could update the Training Page to include the latest version of the EditRetention documentation and think it would be welcome by the field. These are the documents I located. If these are also out of date, please share the location of the latest documentation.

Thank you, again.

Hi, Justin.

Thank you for passing that document along.

The two links I referenced in my original email on the Forecast Builder VLAB page are highlighted in the included image. Both of those links point to old materials. It would be helpful if they could be updated to point to the new documentation.

In light of what is currently underway, I do not think the return on investment in edit retention is worth the effort.

A better return on investment is even more training and best practice on use of DESI/WSUP and its replacement on doing probabilistic IDSS.

Once you stop relying on deterministic grids for messaging the freedom and ease of manuevering is liberating.

Hi, Jeff.

Thank you for your perspective. There will come a day when Edit Retention is no longer relevant. We're not there yet.

Edit Retention solves a specific problem and supports the end user in a way WSUP can't. WSUP is an excellent tool for messaging forecast probabilities. WSUP/DESI and Edit Retention are complementary tools that address different aspects of the forecast and messaging. Both have their uses and are incorporated into effective forecast production and messaging.

We have adjusted the VLAB training page to point to the updated Google Doc that Justin shared above. This will ensure folks are always pointed to the latest training material.
