REQUEST: Separate procedure for WindGust outside FB

Andy,

It seems there is a lot that goes into creating WindGust within FB (initialize with SuperBlend/CONSShort, ensure that is at least equal to our standard smart tool, taper the lower end speeds, etc). I was wondering if you have, or would be able to create, a procedure one could run outside of the FB process that would provide the same result for WindGust grids as we see within FB?

Currently, if we adjust our Wind grids and nothing else, the only options for creating WindGust are:

  1. Re-running FB from the beginning to recreate the WindGust
  2. Running our original smart tool (which doesn't include any reflection of SuperBlend/CONSShort)
  3. Running integrity check to merely ensure WindGust >= Wind

None of the above seem ideal, as they will produce different results than what we would get by running the entire FB process. However, the latter is not a desired option for a relatively minor adjustment.

Just a thought, if you have time.

Jen,

As you were refererring to, within the last ForecastBuilder upgrade, the wind gust tools/procedures from the Central Plains, Upper MS Valley and Great Lakes were embedded into the Integrity Check / Create P-types step.  So rather than just a simple WindGust >= Wind, the integrity check ensures that the WindGust >= regression output from the aforementioned tools.  This was at least some idea to tackle what you are running into.  Still perhaps there could be a way to update WindGust outside of ForecastBuilder, and/or move some of those integrity checks like WindGust back to run right after the Foundation Grids are updated. We could even take the approach like how there is that option to re-run Diurnal temperatures, have an update WindGust.  In any event, you can be assured that increases of Wind will get checked to ensure an appropriate increase in gust.

Thanks for the response, Andy. Personally, I would prefer the solution that is outside ForecastBuilder for this, if it's possible. Even just moving the checks within the current FB procedure would require running FB, knowing which step to start on, making sure you check the right things (and don't inadvertently check things you don't want to change), and likely cancelling out after the wind gust integrity checks are run. I think an external procedure which is as simple/quick to run as the current smart tools would more likely be used in lieu of the current smart tools for a quick change than something still embedded within the FB process.

I'd like to see an option to run it separately as well!

In the Great Lakes region, we're updating our winds AT least 4x a day because the winds over the lake are used for WW3 input. While we have legacy methods to create the wind gust from wind based on the regression, it'd be useful to also have the method FB uses at our disposal.
