Hi Simon,

Precipitation is a little bit different and there are more options. RTMA precipitation is derived directly from the MRMS radar-only precipitation product, and could be used to fill gaps.

That said, there is also an emerging archive available via the Big Data Program in the following S3 Bucket: https://noaa-rtma-pds.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html . This may present an alternate resource as well.

Regards,
Jacob

Thank you, Jacob. So once recent RTMA precipitation files disappear from the main site, there is no other way to download them?

Best,
Simon

Hi Anil,

The historical archive at NCEI was established many years ago and was based upon the original suite of analysis fields that were provided in the RTMA when it was first operational. It uses the WMO headers associated with fields that go out for AWIPS and is archived under the NDGD. Unfortunately this has not been something we've been able to update to include new analysis fields that have been added since, like visibility and cloud cover.

Jacob

Hello Dr Carley,

The current RTMA running data which is available for 14 days has two kinds of files

https://www.ftp.ncep.noaa.gov/data/nccf/com/rtma/prod/rtma2p5.20220505/

rtma2p5.t00z.2dvaranl_ndfd.grb2_wexp  which has 12 bands including specific humidity, visibility, and total cloud cover , rtma2p5.2022050500.pcp.184.grb2   which has precipitation band

Where we try to access the historical data. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/data/national-digital-guidance-database/access/202201/20220105

It doesn’t have specific humidity, visibility, and total cloud cover, even the remaining bands are not available for all hours. For example LEIA98_KWBR_202201052200(precipitation band for 22:00)  doesn’t exist in the above url, Why is it the case?
