DRAFT VIT Proposal for a Cloud-Based Video Hosting Service

VIT Members,

To meet the video streaming needs of VLab users, the VIT has prepared a draft proposal (See "Video Initiative" tab) that recommends to NOAA management that the organization make available to staff a cloud based video streaming service. We will vote to endorse the proposal at our February 26, 2019 meeting. If you would take a few minutes to review the draft document and provide us your comments, by responding to this thread, that would be most helpful.

Can the Commerce Learning Center be connected to VLAB? It's possible to upload video to the CLC. This would also give the ability to track videos as part of a training curriculum.

Is that an option for non-training videos?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

It's possible to upload stand-alone video content without mapping it to training. I can reach out to our NWS CLC representative about the feasibility of uploading what could possibly be hundreds to thousands of videos. What are some examples of non-training videos you were thinking of?

Sounds good TJ. Informational videos, PSAs, education/outreach, Partner event briefings, recordings of presentations on specific topics or a just a video call recording. The ideas here is it would be a lot of videos to archive.

Thanks,

Brian

TJ,

One type of video that we have a lot of are meeting recording.  For example, we recorded yesterday's VIT meeting and I have uploaded it to YouTube for later play back.  We also do the same thing for VLab Forum meetings where someone gives a talk on some topic. One final example, though it is a type of training, is a recording of a demo of VLab functionality.  These recording serve as training but are not what I think of as CLC courses.

You asked earlier if CLC can be incorporated into the VLab.  I think the answer is "Yes".  Would take a look at the following VIT community page and tell me if you can easily access the training material?

John, I'm not able to access what appears to be an embedded CLC link.

Some research projects in Fisheries are looking into video storage with NCEI.  We already have a mature effort with NCEI for storage and accessibility of our sonar data, which adds terabytes each time we send a ship to sea.

Thanks,
