Hello,

We are not seeing snotels any more in IRIS. Is this dataset no longer avail in IRIS?

Ed,

Can you give me an example of a snotel ob that you were getting.  Also, what WFO are you at?

Hi Mike,

We are in WR/PDT. Looking again, I guess we are getting SNOTELs, however, we are not seeing any when we view/set our data selection to snowfall from snow depth. It is only pulling in COCORAHS and COOP obs.

Ed,

It looks like everything is working properly with regard to the snow and snowfall displays.  The issue that is still unresolved in my mind, however, is whether all of the data for the SNOTEL sites is being decoded properly by the IRIS decoders.  If snowfall and snow depth data is being sent out by those sites but not ingested into IRIS, we will need to open a ticket on that.

HTH,

Ed,

If you right click on BMPW1 in IRIS and select the Show All Obs option (then scroll to the right), you will see that the snow depth data is in there, but not for every hour.  It looks like the data is coming in from two different sources:  UTMESNET and MESOWEST.  The UTMESNET data contains all of the reportable elements except for snow depth, while the MESOWEST data contains only snow depth.

Even so, I could not get the MESOWEST sites to display in the Obs Monitor.  Let me do some more investigating.  If I need to open a ticket or tickets on these issues, I will do that and add you as a watcher.

Thanks for letting me know about this issue.

Thanks for putting the extra eyes on this and looking even closer! I see what you mean between utmesnet.dat and MesoWest-snow.dat for the product.

Hi, this is Jim from Great Falls. We are having the same issue here as well. You can't get the snotel data in IRIS to send a LSR. I can see the data when I click show all obs and it is the Mesowest snowdepth column that is visible but not calculating for a LSR.

Just let us know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Mike,

Checking in, as it still appears that the snow depth isn't being decoded properly from the MesoWest-snow.dat product, and as a consequence, snowfall calculated from snow depth isn't functioning correctly (snotel sites continue to not show up). Was a ticket open for this?

Thanks,

Ed

Hello,

Are there any updates for this ticket? With the first AR event impacting the West Coast, it still doesn't look like we are getting snowfall from snow depth from SNOTELs as of date.

Hi Ed,

Looking through the SNOTELs out there right now, I see two issues. First, a number of those you sent have no snow depth change, so there would not be a snowfall from snow depth. Secondly, it appears that the normal MesoWest feed does not have snow depth, but the MesoWest-snow.dat feed does. This is a problem because they report at different times, and IRIS treat these as different obs for the same site. You can see in the attached image what I mean for one of your sites. If you edit the site, and tell it to only ingest from MesoWest-snow.dat, that would fix that issue, but the snow depth values also jump around (such as the 157.0 at the bottom of the image), which also breaks the algorithm.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi this is Jim, from the NWS in Great Falls,

I have noticed something similar, in that the SNOTEL data shows up for liquid, but not for snow data.

When I try to run snow from snow depth, it only puts snotel sites that were sent in a PNS earlier in the week, nothing new.

Jim

RE: Snotels no longer available in IRIS?

Thanks, Matt. So we have to edit all our SNOTEL sites and tell it to only ingest from MesoWest-snow.dat and that will fix the issue? I presume then we will only have snow depth and lose pcpn and temp by limiting it to MesoWest-snow.dat for the "product"? This appears to be a tad different than what Mike Sutton alluded to as the problem (and that it was an issue on how IRIS compiles the data).

Hi Ed,

I would edit a few to only ingest from MesoWest-snow.dat, and verify that corrects it before editing them all. It should, unless the MesoWest-snow.dat feed is inconsistent. Yes, you'll lose the other elements like temperature that are in the main Mesowest data set.

Thanks,
Matt
