New PETSS storm surge station sample points

Hi WSUP Developers,

 

WSUP v7.2 was released this morning, adding the PETSS and PSurge datasets. Storm surge station pop-up windows linked to NOAA Tides and Currents, National Water Prediction Service gauge forecasts, and latest P-ETSS hydrographs were also added. It looks like a user can easily see where these stations are located because they load as sample points on the map when the forecast data is displayed. While it appears at first glance that all of the PETSS stations have a pop up when you click on the map, not all of them show up as sample points, making the ones w/o sample points a bit more hidden to navigate to. I would recommend displaying the sample points for all PETSS/Psurge storm surge stations by default on the map. Please see attached graphic for more details.

Hi Jared,

Thank you for pointing this out. What's happening is those points aren't displaying because they have no extracted value from the P-ETSS grid. This is due to the lat/lon at that station lining up with an undefined value pixel on the P-ETSS grid. As you noted, you can still click on the map and get the station popup (they're separate from the sample point values on the map). You're correct that the data does still exist on the P-ETSS page, so there has to be some misalignment somewhere.

We'll discuss with the Surge Team to see if we can remedy this.

Hi Jared,

In our last release, we released a new layer, Sample Point Locations. This should come on by default when you load up P-ETSS or P-Surge. 



This will allow you to see where all of the stations are located even if we don't extract the data from the underlying grid. The ultimate remedy will be to extract all of the data from the underlying data. The issue is known (has to do with the distributed image resolution compared to the faw underlying data), but we need to work with the Storm Surge team to come up with the best solution. We'll let you know when we get that fix in.

Thanks, Dana. I appreciate you and your team looking into the issue and taking the steps to resolve it. I checked out the new Sample Point Locations feature that you added. The dot makes it easy to figure out where the point should be, so that's a viable interim solution. I do have a small suggestion for this new feature:  The dot color is gray which makes it hard to see when Dark Mode is enabled and the background map turns to a similar shade of gray. Maybe changing the dot to white when dark mode is enabled would add some contrast and take care of the problem?
