For Wx in Context section - have font size only apply to sites in table

Youngling Posts: 3 Join Date: 6/2/15 Recent Posts

For the Wx in Context, when you adjust the font size, it adjusts the font size to all sample points on the map.  Can we have the font size adjustment only apply to the sites in the table?  This way it can help make them stand out.

Thanks!

Andy,

Thanks for the suggestion.

Changing the font sizes of these two point overlays independently is problematic as the colored WIC points layer is actually written on top of the white sample points layer.    How about if we add the ability to toggle the sample points layer off directly from the WIC menu?

[  ] All Points
[  ] Potential Record Points
Opacity:  100
Font Size: 8

That way, potential record points would stand out.

Dave,
I like that as an alternative!  Let's try it out.

Hi Andy,

We've implemented the new checkbox. Give it a try and let us know if you find any issues.

Kevin,
  That works!

One thing I did notice is that the warmer colors of the background field can make it a problem for some samples to clearly show.  With the WPC Wx In Context Viewer there wasn't really any issue with that since it was on a white background.  Unfortunately I don't know what else you can do with the temperatures.

Yeah, that's the nature of the beast when drawing text on top of colorful images. One may turn off the element layer with the NBM Forecasts checkbox in the Map Display Options menu. That would leave the basemap displayed, which you may also deactivate or reduce the opacity of.

An improvement we plan to make in the coming months is to offer seasonal colormaps (similar to https://digital.mdl.nws.noaa.gov/), which may help the WIC text stand out a bit more.

Andy,

The opacity of both the Basemap and the NBM Forecast can be reduced under Map Viewer Options.   If you prefer a white background that contrasts well with the sample points, you can easily create such a background this way.
