Water Temperature Influence on URMA Air T. HRRR still?

I thought with the most recent HRRR build in Dec 20, the influence of water bodies on the air temperature was going to be improved. I was surprised to see the URMA analysis clearly still showing the effect, which continues to influence the NBM BC and thus any T grids and, it appears, NBM mixing heights.

Hi Dan,

The temperature background fields for RTMA/URMA are currently derived by blending downscaled forecast output from the HRRR and NAM Nest models.  The following slide deck shows the downscaled HRRR and NAM Nest temperature output on slide 3, and the 3-km resolution output on slide 4, that was used for the 21Z March 20th URMA analysis.  This indicates that the colder temperatures along the Mississippi River and small inland lakes are originating in the NAM Nest fields, rather than the HRRR.
Note that in 3D-RTMA/URMA, which is expected to be implemented in FY2023, we will be deriving background fields entirely from the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS; ~FY2023 implementation).

Please let us know if you have any further questions.
